What is the
Unpicked Collective?
The unpicked Collective is a 12-week design club to inspire you to get making.
You’ll receive weekly informal design chats in a community group to demystify the design process, a monthly support call to get help with your designs and connect the dots; getting answers to your sewing and pattern making questions.
Plus you’ll be invited to a creative masterclass - and explore a new area of creative pattern-making.
This collective is about making space for your creativity, playing with ideas, getting inspired and connecting with others.
It’s about skill building without stacking up your ‘to-do’ list.
It’s understanding we live busy lives whilst also knowing how important it is to carve out time for ourselves amongst it.
This collective is designed to support, inspire and work alongside the creative projects that you have planned (or want to plan!), rather than adding more to your plate.
Weekly design chats
Each week the informal design chats will break down a design and ‘unpick’ it so you can see the initial workings behind it.
You may decide to explore some of these further (in which case you can use the ½ scale blocks to try them out for yourself) but the idea is to provide a quick video you can watch to help build your knowledge without having to take action - by watching me take apart designs, you can learn the process and gain confidence to do it for your own.
You can also add your comments and questions below each one to see what others are thinking and share any inspiration it may spark.
Monthly call
The monthly call is a place to submit your designs, ideas and questions and get Alys’ help.
This may be asking for advice about the order of construction or breaking down a design of your own so you can use more of the pattern-making skills you already have. Or use it as a chance to get answers to those little questions that crop up as you hack or draft your own clothes.
There’s a form to submit your questions and designs ahead of time (open throughout the month) and there will be a replay if you’re unable to make it live.
Some months you may have lots to ask, others you may enjoy seeing what others are making.
Creative Pattern Making Masterclass
Each quarter, I’ll be exploring a new area of creative pattern making in a masterclass and you’re invited!
I’ll explore subjects like pleats and tucks, creating sculptural shapes, or draping!
We’ll share loads of inspirations and each masterclass will have a launch party weekend where you can dedicate some time to try out these new techniques and we can bounce ideas around together.

Hi! I’m Alys, a pattern maker who's worked for brands like Alexander McQueen, steventai and Teija.
My love for pattern making developed at uni, combining my enjoyment of experimenting and problem-solving with art, sewing and creativity.
There’s nothing better than the buzz of bringing an idea to life and getting lost in the making.
So here's to exploring more, playing more and trusting in the beauty of the process. To transform the ideas inside our heads into pieces we LOVE to wear.

There aren’t any 'set projects' as such during the 3 months. This is intentional because we’re all unique and let’s face it, we have huge wishlists as it is. Instead, the collective aims to inspire and support your own practice.
Each week I'll break down a different design which we can chat about in the community group. And the monthly calls will be about your own projects and questions.
The masterclass will have lots of design inspiration and try-it-yourself exercises which you can try out new techniques in 1/2 scale (or full scale if you prefer!).

There’s a form to submit your questions and designs ahead of time (open throughout the month) and there will be a replay if you’re unable to make it live. So you won't be missing out if you're unable to join live.
You could even use the replay to keep you company whilst you're sewing!
The times of the calls will be confirmed once the group has started as I'll submit a poll to see what works best for everyone.
It's hard to hit all time-zones so they may alternate each month to cover as many as possible. But it's likely lots of the group will be in Australia / Europe and some joining from the US and Canada.

The collective is intentionally created with 'just enough' content to add inspiration and support into your practise.. but not too much to overwhelm or overload your creative wishlists!
I imagine you sitting and grabbing a cuppa each week whilst you watch the design chat and then schedule some time each quarter to explore a new skill in the masterclass. Plus the calls are there when you need some added support or to get inspired by what others are making!
