Designer examples - Tiered garments

Pattern making isn’t just learning new skills - unlock the possibilities of how you can use them with these dreamy tiered garments.

Match your sleeve panels with the body in this amazing colour block example!

You can start with any base pattern, I love these sleeveless looks.

You can choose whether to sew the panels as a regular seam or to finish the edges and overlap them on top of the seams! Just remember to finish the edge of both pieces before gathering and stitching in place.

Pair tiered panels with a shirt pattern! How gorgeous is this gingham Aje number!

Pair it with some killer sleeves!

I love the scallops sandwiched in-between each tier! It feels like a super inventive way to add some playfulness into the garment.

This top panel is a curved seam (learn more about adding gather to shaped panels in our Intro to pattern making courses) and the second is a rectangular tiered panel.

Tiered Skirts

Use a fitted waistband and add tiered rectangles which will gather to the size of the waistband.

Keep the fitted top panel on a skirt and add the tiered panels below.

Add a thin panel the same measurement as the top tier to create this elasticated waistband.
